What are the 2026 Winter Olympics and where are they being held?
The Games are returning to the Italian Alps - in two cities connected by one of Europe's most dramatic mountain passes.
The answer
The 2026 Winter Olympics (officially the Milano Cortina 2026 Games) will be held across Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo in northern Italy, with venues spread across the Lombardy and Veneto regions. It's the first Winter Olympics in Italy since the 2006 Turin Games and the first to be jointly hosted by two Italian cities. The Games will feature 116 events across 16 disciplines, including new events in ski mountaineering. Cortina d'Ampezzo, nestled in the Dolomites, previously hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics, while Milan will host ice sports and the opening ceremony at the iconic San Siro stadium. The event is expected to attract over 2,900 athletes from 90+ countries and generate global viewership of over 2 billion.
