How does color symbolism differ across cultures?

While Western brides wear white for purity, in many Asian cultures white is the color of mourning and death.

The answer

Color symbolism is highly culture-dependent. White represents purity and weddings in Western cultures but signifies mourning in China, India, and much of East Asia. Red means danger or passion in the West but is the color of luck, prosperity, and celebration in China, where brides traditionally wear red. Yellow symbolizes royalty in Thailand (insulting it is illegal) but cowardice in English-speaking countries. Green represents Islam and paradise in Muslim cultures but can symbolize infidelity in China. Purple was associated with royalty in Europe because Tyrian purple dye was extraordinarily expensive, while in Brazil and Thailand, purple is associated with mourning. Black conveys sophistication or death in the West but is the color of health and masculinity in parts of Africa.
