How does Bollywood compare to Hollywood at the global box office?
Bollywood produces nearly twice as many films as Hollywood and sells billions more tickets - but Hollywood still dominates revenue.
The answer
India's film industry produced approximately 1,800 films in 2023, compared to Hollywood's roughly 800, making it the world's largest by output. Bollywood sells an estimated 2.6 billion tickets annually in India alone, versus Hollywood's 1.2 billion domestic tickets. However, Hollywood generated $33.5 billion in global box office revenue in 2023, while Indian cinema earned approximately $2.7 billion. The gap is primarily due to ticket prices - average Indian tickets cost under $1 compared to $10.50 in the US. Bollywood's global reach is expanding: Indian films earned $300 million outside India in 2023. The blockbuster RRR (2022) won an Academy Award and grossed $160 million worldwide. India's total film industry, including Telugu, Tamil, and other regional cinemas, actually produces over 3,000 films annually.
