How have programming languages evolved over the decades?
The first programmer was a countess in the 1840s - and she wrote for a computer that was never built.
The answer
Ada Lovelace wrote the first algorithm intended for machine execution in 1843 for Charles Babbage's theoretical Analytical Engine. The first functioning programming language, Fortran, appeared in 1957 for scientific computing. C (1972) gave programmers low-level hardware control, while Python (1991) prioritized readability and ease of use. Each era's languages reflect its needs: Java (1995) for cross-platform applications, JavaScript (1995) for web interactivity, Swift (2014) for mobile apps, and Rust (2015) for memory-safe systems programming. Today, over 700 programming languages exist.
