How big is the dark web compared to the regular internet?
The internet you use daily is a tiny sliver of what exists.
The answer
The 'surface web' - everything indexed by search engines like Google - comprises only about 4–5% of the total internet. The 'deep web' (password-protected content like email inboxes, bank accounts, and databases) makes up the vast majority. The 'dark web,' accessible only through specialized browsers like Tor, accounts for roughly 0.01% of the total internet. Despite its reputation, much of the dark web is used by journalists, activists, and citizens in authoritarian countries to communicate safely.
