What will ESA's JUICE mission study at Jupiter?
Europe sent a spacecraft to explore three of Jupiter's icy moons, each hiding vast oceans beneath their frozen surfaces.
The answer
The European Space Agency's JUICE (Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer), launched on April 14, 2023, will arrive at Jupiter in July 2031 after gravitational assists from Earth, Venus, and Earth again. The spacecraft will perform 35 flybys of Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto before entering orbit around Ganymede in December 2034 - becoming the first spacecraft to orbit a moon other than Earth's. JUICE carries 10 instruments including ice-penetrating radar capable of probing 9 kilometers deep, a magnetometer to characterize subsurface oceans through their magnetic signatures, and a laser altimeter for surface mapping. Ganymede is the solar system's largest moon, exceeding Mercury in diameter, and possesses its own magnetic field - unique among moons. The mission will assess habitability conditions in these ocean worlds, complementing NASA's Europa Clipper focused study of Europa.
