What was historic about the Fram2 mission in 2025?
Four civilians orbited Earth over both poles - a trajectory never attempted by any crewed mission.
The answer
On April 1, 2025, the Fram2 mission launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9, becoming the first crewed spaceflight to enter a polar orbit - passing over both the North and South Poles. Named after the legendary Norwegian exploration vessel, the privately funded mission carried four civilians on a trajectory that no human had ever flown, not even during the Space Shuttle or ISS programs, which orbit at lower inclinations. The polar orbit provided unprecedented views of Earth's polar regions and the aurora borealis from above. The mission also conducted scientific experiments on the effects of space radiation at polar orbits, where Earth's magnetic field provides less shielding.
