What happened during SpaceX Starship's first successful orbital test flight?
The largest and most powerful rocket ever built finally reached orbit, changing the economics of spaceflight forever.
The answer
SpaceX's Starship, standing 121 meters tall with 33 Raptor engines generating 74 meganewtons of thrust, completed its first successful orbital-class test flight on its fourth attempt in June 2024. The Super Heavy booster performed a controlled landing burn in the Gulf of Mexico, while the Starship upper stage reached orbital velocity and survived atmospheric reentry, splashing down in the Indian Ocean. On the fifth flight in October 2024, the 'chopstick' catch mechanism at the launch tower successfully caught the returning Super Heavy booster. Starship's fully reusable design promises to reduce launch costs to approximately $10 per kilogram to orbit, compared to $2,700 per kilogram on Falcon 9, potentially enabling Mars colonization and massive space station construction.
