How far have the Voyager probes traveled?

Launched in 1977, they're now in interstellar space and still calling home.

The answer

Voyager 1, launched in September 1977, is the most distant human-made object at over 24 billion kilometers from Earth (as of 2025) and entered interstellar space in August 2012. Voyager 2 followed into interstellar space in November 2018. Both probes carry golden records with sounds and images of Earth for any extraterrestrial finders. Despite being over 45 years old, they still communicate with Earth, though signals take over 22 hours to reach us at light speed. Their plutonium power sources will run out around 2025–2030, after which they will drift silently among the stars forever.
