Why did the DC Extended Universe struggle against the MCU?
DC had better-known characters and a decades-long head start, yet still couldn't compete.
The answer
The DCEU launched in 2013 with Man of Steel but struggled to match the MCU's success for several interconnected reasons. While Marvel spent years building individual character films before The Avengers (2012), DC rushed its shared universe by introducing Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Aquaman all in Batman v Superman (2016) before any had solo films. Warner Bros. lacked a unified creative leader equivalent to Marvel's Kevin Feige. Zack Snyder's dark, serious tone alienated casual audiences accustomed to Marvel's humor. Repeated director changes and studio interference led to inconsistent quality. The Man of Steel writer David Goyer later acknowledged that DC tried to replicate Marvel's playbook without building the necessary foundation first.
