Is The Lion King really just Hamlet with lions?
Disney didn't originally plan to adapt Shakespeare - someone in a pitch meeting just noticed the similarities.
The answer
The Hamlet connection was not part of The Lion King's original concept. During a story meeting, a team member pointed out that the developing plot - a young prince whose father is murdered by his uncle, who then usurps the throne and exiles the heir - closely mirrored Shakespeare's tragedy. The room responded enthusiastically, and filmmakers deliberately deepened the parallels: Simba mirrors Hamlet's indecision, Scar parallels Claudius, Mufasa's ghost echoes King Hamlet's specter, and Timon and Pumbaa serve as comic relief like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Early drafts went even further - Simba originally died, and Scar was meant to deliver Horatio's line, 'Good night, sweet prince.' Disney confirmed the Shakespeare inspiration on the 1994 Platinum Edition DVD.
