How did Samuel L. Jackson become Nick Fury before anyone asked him?
Marvel literally drew his face into a comic book without permission - and it worked out perfectly.
The answer
In 2002, writer Mark Millar and artist Bryan Hitch redesigned Nick Fury for Marvel's Ultimate Universe comics, basing the character's appearance directly on Samuel L. Jackson without his knowledge or consent. The original Fury had been a white man with graying temples since 1963. When Jackson discovered his likeness in a comic shop, his representatives contacted Marvel, initially raising concerns about unauthorized use. The situation resolved when Marvel offered Jackson a multi-picture deal to portray Fury in future films. Jackson's first appearance as Fury came in Iron Man's post-credits scene in 2008, launching one of the MCU's most enduring roles spanning over a dozen films and TV series.
