Did Wonder Woman's creator really invent the lie detector?
The man behind the Lasso of Truth also helped create one of the most controversial devices in criminal justice.
The answer
William Moulton Marston, the psychologist who created Wonder Woman in 1941, developed the systolic blood pressure test in the early 1910s after his wife Elizabeth Holloway noticed her blood pressure rose when she became angry or excited. This discovery became a foundational component of the modern polygraph machine, later built by John Augustus Larson in 1921. Marston's obsession with truth detection directly influenced Wonder Woman's signature weapon: the Lasso of Truth, which compels anyone caught within it to speak honestly. Beyond these accomplishments, Marston also created the DISC personality assessment model still used in corporate settings today. He lived in a polyamorous relationship with his wife and their partner Olive Byrne, who also inspired the character.
