Did Walt Disney have a secret apartment inside Disneyland?
There's a window above the fire station on Main Street that hides one of Disney's best-kept secrets.
The answer
Walt Disney built a small private apartment above the Town Square Fire Station on Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland, completed before the park opened in 1955. He needed a place to stay while simultaneously overseeing the park's construction and producing Lady and the Tramp. Set decorator Emile Kuri furnished the space in a Victorian theme with cranberry glass collected by Walt's wife Lillian. Despite its tiny size, the apartment had a fully functional kitchen, bathroom with shower, and a cozy sitting area. Walt famously did not allow family photographs inside except for one National Geographic shoot. Today, a lamp in the apartment window remains permanently lit to symbolize Walt's enduring presence. Disneyland now offers a 'Walt's Main Street Story Tour' that concludes with a rare visit to the apartment.
