What is the future of ocean exploration?
We have explored more of the Moon's surface than the ocean floor, but that is about to change dramatically.
The answer
Ocean exploration is entering a transformative era driven by advances in autonomous technology, artificial intelligence, and miniaturized sensors. Fleets of autonomous underwater vehicles can now survey vast areas of seafloor without human intervention, while AI processes sonar and video data in real time to identify new species and geological features. The Seabed 2030 initiative aims to produce a complete high-resolution map of the entire ocean floor by 2030. Environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling allows scientists to detect which species are present simply by filtering seawater. New materials and battery technologies are enabling submersibles to reach full ocean depth more routinely, and satellite-based ocean monitoring provides unprecedented views of surface conditions. These technologies promise to reveal more about our ocean in the next decade than in all of previous human history.
