What are the strangest creatures found in the deep sea?
Some deep-sea animals look so alien that scientists initially doubted they were real.
The answer
The barreleye fish has a completely transparent head, allowing its tubular eyes to rotate and look straight up through its skull. The vampire squid, despite its fearsome name, is a gentle detritivore that cloaks itself in bioluminescent-tipped arms when threatened. The anglerfish uses a bioluminescent lure dangling from its forehead, and in some species, the male permanently fuses to the female's body, sharing her bloodstream. These creatures have evolved remarkable adaptations to survive in a world of perpetual darkness and extreme pressure.
