Why has no one ever found the tomb of Genghis Khan?
The most powerful conqueror in history was buried in an unmarked grave. 800 years later, his final resting place remains the world's greatest archaeological mystery.
The answer
Genghis Khan died in August 1227, and according to Mongol tradition, his burial was kept absolutely secret. Legend states that the funeral escort killed anyone they encountered along the route, soldiers rode horses over the grave to conceal it, and a river was diverted to cover the site. Some accounts claim 2,500 attendants were executed after the burial. Despite extensive searches using satellite imagery and ground-penetrating radar across Mongolia's Khentii Province, the tomb has never been found. The Valley of the Khans Project, using satellite crowdsourcing with over 10,000 volunteers analyzing imagery, identified promising sites but none have been confirmed. Mongolian cultural sensitivities also limit excavation efforts.
