What stunning new discoveries have recent excavations at Pompeii revealed?
Nearly 2,000 years after Vesuvius erupted, Pompeii is still giving up its secrets - including a stunning blue banquet hall found in 2024.
The answer
Ongoing excavations in Pompeii's Regio IX, part of the Italian government's Great Pompeii Project, have yielded remarkable finds in 2024. Archaeologists uncovered a brilliantly preserved blue banquet room (triclinium) with frescoes depicting Helen of Troy and the god Apollo, its walls painted in vivid Egyptian blue pigment. Other recent discoveries include a bakery where enslaved people were confined in windowless rooms, a construction site frozen mid-renovation showing Roman building techniques, and thermopolia (ancient snack bars) with intact terracotta vessels still containing traces of food. Only about two-thirds of the 170-acre site has been excavated, promising decades more of revelations.
