Was Cleopatra actually Egyptian?
The most famous Egyptian queen was actually Greek.
The answer
Cleopatra VII was ethnically Macedonian Greek, descended from Ptolemy I, one of Alexander the Great's generals who took control of Egypt after Alexander's death in 323 BCE. The Ptolemaic dynasty ruled Egypt for nearly 300 years while maintaining Greek customs and language. Cleopatra was notable for being the first of her dynasty to actually learn the Egyptian language. Despite Hollywood depictions, historical coins suggest she was not conventionally beautiful but was renowned for her intellect, wit, and political cunning.
