How long did it take for women to win the right to vote?
The fight for women's suffrage took over 70 years in most countries.
The answer
New Zealand became the first self-governing country to grant women the right to vote in 1893, but most nations took decades longer. In the United States, the 19th Amendment wasn't ratified until 1920 after a 72-year campaign beginning at the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention. Britain granted partial women's suffrage in 1918 and full equal voting rights in 1928. France didn't follow until 1944, and Switzerland - often seen as a bastion of democracy - waited until 1971 at the federal level.
