Why do China and the USA together dominate over 80% of global AI research?
Two nations are locked in a technological arms race that is reshaping the global balance of power - and producing the vast majority of the world's AI breakthroughs.
The answer
As of 2025, China and the United States together account for over 80% of global AI research publications, patents, and investment, creating an unprecedented concentration of AI capability in two nations. The Stanford HAI 2025 AI Index Report documented that China leads in total AI publications and patents filed, while the US leads in highly-cited research, frontier model development, and private AI investment (over $109 billion in 2024 alone - roughly 12 times China's private AI investment). China has produced leading models like DeepSeek, Qwen, and Ernie, while the US dominates with OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and Meta. The competition has become deeply geopolitical: the US imposed semiconductor export controls in 2022-2024 restricting China's access to advanced AI chips, while China accelerated domestic chip development through Huawei's Ascend processors. The EU, UK, and India are investing billions to avoid being left behind, but the sheer scale of US-China AI ecosystems - in talent, data, compute, and capital - makes catching up extremely challenging.
