Why did Stable Diffusion democratize AI image generation overnight?
For the first time, anyone with a decent GPU could generate stunning images at home - for free.
The answer
Released by Stability AI in August 2022, Stable Diffusion was the first high-quality text-to-image model to be fully open-sourced, with model weights freely available for download. Built on a latent diffusion architecture developed by researchers at LMU Munich and Runway, it could run on consumer GPUs with as little as 8 GB of VRAM, making AI image generation accessible to millions. Within weeks, an explosion of community tools, fine-tuned models, and creative applications emerged. By contrast, DALL-E 2 and Midjourney remained closed and API-gated.
