Why are nations racing to build their own AI models?
Countries worldwide are pouring billions into 'sovereign AI' to avoid depending on American tech giants for their AI future.
The answer
The sovereign AI movement accelerated dramatically in 2024-2025 as nations recognized AI as critical infrastructure. France invested over 109 billion euros in AI at the February 2025 AI Action Summit, backing Mistral AI, which raised 1.7 billion euros at an 11.7 billion euro valuation. The UAE's Technology Innovation Institute developed Falcon, a powerful open-source LLM funded by sovereign wealth. India launched the IndiaAI Mission with GPU clusters and multilingual models like Bhashini. Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore similarly invested in national AI clouds and region-specific models. The goal: ensuring domestic data stays sovereign.
