How much energy does AI actually consume?
Training one large AI model can use as much electricity as 100 American homes consume in a year.
The answer
AI's energy footprint has become a major concern. Training GPT-4 is estimated to have consumed around 50 GWh of electricity, and the International Energy Agency reported that global data center electricity consumption could double from 460 TWh in 2022 to over 1,000 TWh by 2026, driven largely by AI workloads. A single ChatGPT query uses roughly 10 times more energy than a Google search. Tech giants are responding by investing heavily in nuclear energy - Microsoft signed a deal to restart Three Mile Island's reactor, Amazon invested in small modular reactors, and Google contracted with Kairos Power. The tension between AI advancement and environmental sustainability is one of the defining challenges of the industry.
